But that doesn't explain Ms. Pickler (whom, btw, I had never heard of before now either).

I've never watched the show, but based on the commercials I've seen I'm pretty sure they don't bring in average kids. The whole point is to make the adult contestants look dumber than a 5th grader, so they bring in above average 5th graders. I think I can safely say if I went to the local elementary schools and quizzed all the 5th graders a very small percentage would know that Budapest was the capital of Hungary.

Funny thing - last time I went, it seemed like everyone was reluctant to stray more than 5 feet away from their cars lest John started to pull parts off to see on eBay

Yeah, that thought passed my mind as I was typing, but then I realized that it was just a generalization.

Whaddya mean it doesn't explain little Ms. Beautiful and Dumb? Are you telling me that all throughout your school years, not once did you witness an account of that "hottest chick in school" flirt with some nerd in order to get free test answers/homework completed/science projects? I'm running with a stereotype here, but Blondie seems to be just that type of girl. "Is France a country?" I mean, come on! There are only two ways she couldn't know that:

A: If you opened her geography books today, you would get that cracking sound that happens the first time a book is ever opened.

B: She lives in some strange part of the country where the populace is so anti-French that they don't even mention it's name.

Although B probably has a better possibility of being true in the good old US of A than anywhere else in the world, I'll go all in on A.

Capture/record/replay streaming video content

I wanted to personalize some of the portable media players I got people for Xmas by pre-loading them with different clips I'd seen on youtube.

The process reminds me a bit of what we had to do to make MP3s back in the mid-late 90s.

First thing you have to do is capture the clip in its native format, flash video, or .FLV. There are plugins for Firefox to do it, or you can use this service to do it for you for Youtube, Google video, and several other sites:
http://keepvid.com/

You enter the link to the video, they return a link with the .FLV file a bit later, which you download and keep. You can get free players for your PC to view the FLV files directly, so if that's as far as the files are going, you can stop there.

I wanted to get these onto the Sansa e270's for delivery. The Sansa video loading/converting software cannot directly convert from the FLV format (and likely, nor will the video loading SW of most similar devices) so they have to go to an intermediate format first. In this case I found success with a very simple app called "Batch FLV Converter", which is based on the ffmpeg conversion process. This was the fastest and simplest after sampling 5-6 different free FLV converters.

Not quite done though! For some reason the Sansa loading/converting SW took issue with the immediate output of the Batch FLV Converter program, and of that of the other free ones I'd tried. Not sure exactly why, as at that point the videos were in wmv format and played fine in Windows Media Player. I imagine there's a free app out there now that can convert directly from FLW to media device-palatable format, but I gave up after the first 5-6 most popular appearing ones. Instead, I used Vista's built-in Movie Maker app to re-process the VMW files (since it wouldn't recognize FLV), and do some basic video editing.

Once THAT was done, I could point the media device's loader/converter to Movie Maker's output, and it would do its own final translation to a .mov of the style it knew how to play. Success at last! Pretty neat to see those streaming clips on these devices the size of a cigarette lighter. And on the little screens you don't mind the Youtube quality so much..

If you look in your internet options tab, open the temp internet files and organize by type, you'll be able to locate the video's flv file on your own. Should be labled with a number that matches the number at the end of the URL for the video link.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to add a "NSFW" to this. The girl looks like she's about 10, and could make for a difficult explanation. Just watch it, and you'll see why it's worth watching though.

I have a chance to drive one of these a couple years ago and thought the guy was joking so I didnt show. Come to find out he waited for me for 45 minutes to show up. I should be kicked repeatedly in the seeds for not showing.
