Very cool. Thanks for that. (USCG 1989-2000)

Those 47' MLB's are absolute marvels. The old 44's were great, but these things....holy smokes!

I helped develop the CG Advanced Rescue Swimmer School at Cape dissapointment. If you think driving a boat in waves like that is something, try swimming in them!

Few people have experienced the extreme violence of being tossed in a big wave. If you keep your head about you, you're usually OK, but if not, you're probably done for.

Frankly, I'd rather be in the water by myself when a wave like that hits than in that boat. Having all those hard edges tumbling about is some scarry shit.

Hancock movie teaser trailer. Looks funny:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0zhKUs2oe4

I'm kind of interested at the negative reactions many people are giving it. Many think it's a bad move for Will Smith. I think it could be funny as hell. The trailer is exactly what I like about superhero movies, and it has comedy. I think it will definitely pay off at the box office.

I heard somewhere recently that Will Smith has the highest average box-office opening numbers of any current "leading man" in Hollywood.

That actually looks pretty funny.

When I moved to Hawaii in '94 I pledged to myself that before I left I would surf on a 20'+ day. I was a pretty good surfer when I got there (though mainly and still a longboarder) it took me about 5 years to work up to it.

The level of violence really has a lot more to do with the wave it's azimuth to the reef and which particular reef than it does with the size. A 12' wave at pipe will beat you a lot harder than a 20' wave at Avalanche or Outside Alligators.

Waimea isn't that tough a wave at all. The problem with it is that it is very accesible and very very visible. So if it's breaking at all it's as busy as Paris Hiltons cooch. The crowds there are insane in the 12' - 18' range. When it hits 20' the crowd though still big changes. Many of the same faces, but the lower teir guys aren't getting waves. Those riding at that height have to be far more fit because the peak shifts all over the place and the currents are fierce and shifty as well. You paddle your ass off for an hour to maybe get in position for one or two waves. If you manage to get in position and if it's your turn you take a crack at it. Otherwise you get the fuck out of the way and if that means you take donuts to do it then so be it. When Waimea gets past 20' it's a different beast entirely than it is at 15' - 18'.

Big Sunset is probably the toughest spot to surf. By far the shiftiest peak. It will move 50+ yards between sets due entirely to massive amounts of water rolling over the reef. A difference in only a couple feet of water could move the peak in, out, left or right by a huge distance. You get your ass handed to you if you get caught sleeping when the West peak hits and you aren't in position.

Backyards can be very similar on a NW swell, but if it's a North swell it can be a pussycat on the right tide.

My first 20' day was at Avalance. A lot of current out there, but it's consistant and predictable and the reef is abrupt and wedge shaped so the peak is pretty consistant as well. If you are going to try to break that 20' cherry, especially for a longboarder, that's the spot. I managed 3 waves in 4 hours and was absolutely spent afterward. The strangest thing was that on that day and on each 20' day to come I didn't recall enjoying the experience. It required far too much concentration, there were far too many factors out of my control and the intimate knowledge of the potential for disaster resulted in an experience that I'll never forget but didn't enjoy.

My last 20' day occured by accident. I was out on a reasonably large day (about 12' - 15') at outside alligators. I was a dumbass and didn't check the bouy report so I was unaware that a big bump in wave height was coming that afternoon. The sets started getting bigger and bigger and I decided that I was too tired at that point to hang around for what I now realized was coming and (here comes the jinx) decided to "catch one more" to the beach.
I fell on the takeoff, got worked, snapped my leash and was left swimming. On a normal day that wouldn't have been a big deal. I'd just swim in. But on big days the very rocky beach at Alligators is tough to get in and out of WITH a board, let alone without. The current runs E-W across Waimea so I couldn't swim into the bay and get out that way. So I had to swim West. I thought I'd be able to get in at Chun's/Jocko's but it was closed out as was Laniakea. I eventually wound up swimming to Haleiwa bay and climbing out on the beach behind Haleiwa Surf-n-Sea.

My board had gotten into the Waimea current and been washed up on the beach. I was friends with most of the lifeguards through their joint training with us and they'd come looking for me. Found my van at Alligators and eventually found me walking up Kam Highway back toward Alligators. In all, it was about a 2.5mi swim, it was the toughest physical act of my life and it was the last time I went out on a legit "big" day.

As fat and out of shape as I am now I would be damn proud.

You should be proud too. You are surfing where kings once tread.

Add me to the list. I've surfed tripple overhead, but now am on crutches over an injury received playing soccer with ten-year-olds!

Ultimately wave height is useful mainly for bragging however, as there's more chance of harm riding a hollow 6-footer over a sucking reef than there is riding most sloppy, spilling 20-footers.

The older I get the better I was!

CH-47 Chinook doing some acrobatics.
Eons ago there was a vid of a Chinook that got upside-down, the rotors lost synch, and it just went very badly from there. This guy apparently knows just how far not to push it...very cool.

I've harbored a long dislike of Chinooks from my teenage days working as the lineboy at an American flying club at a helicopter base in Germany. Our parking pad was a big area covered by PSP (pierced steel plating) over a gravel bed, and occassionally visiting big helicopters would come and park at the open end of the PSP pad. The Jolly Green Giants and Chinooks would both park there, but for some reason the Chinooks would stir the gravel out from under the PSP and turn the rocks into projectiles. Since they were also prop-strike hazards it was my job to go scour the pad and pick up all the loose rocks after they left. Bastards.

The wheelie was a nice touch, too.

Airbus tail strike.
Looks like it has a skid plate for that reason. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, looks like they were testing the low limits of takeoff speeds.

These videos are pretty funny, in a French Red Vs Blue kinda way. The maverick missle part in the second one had me laughing.

Some close-ups of the Blue Angels under-bridge fly-by here. Scroll down half-way.

My brother in law sails his boat in the bay. Now that the yearly school festival is out of my agenda I can actually make Fleet Week again and hopefully drag him out there.
